  • Vintage Pitcher, Franciscan Desert Rose, 28oz. Embossed Pink Floral, Hand Decorated Mid Century California Pottery, Unmarked USA, Pristine Kitchen Collectible, (Discontinued)
  • Vintage:  1941 - early 1960
  • Made in USA
  • Details:  This is the classic pink floral pattern from Franciscan called Desert Rose, introduced in 1941, with pink roses and bright green leaves on a beige ceramic background.   The design is embossed, hand painted and colors are vivid.  Although this piece doesn't have the typical backstamp, we have done a thorough research to learn it is original Gladding McBean, California pottery.  According to experts, earlier pieces were often marked only with a "Made in U.S.A." stamp, or a model/shape number, rather than the full backstamp.  This one shows the mold number "L5".  It also has the three kiln "pin" marks on the bottom, which was common practice in the production of Franciscan earthenware for the Desert Rose, Apple, and Ivy patterns, they would put these pieces up on "stilts", in the kiln, which left the marks.  Hand washing in recommended since it is old, and hand painted, it is not dishwasher safe.  This pitcher holds 28 oz, and due to its size, it's also been called a Milk Pitcher.  You are getting this in pristine, beautiful condition. Because we know that even the smallest mark (or lack thereof), can impact a collector’s valuation, we’ve proactively reduced the price to ensure it remains a great value for collectors.  If this is your patten, we also carry several Complete Place Settings, Serving Pieces, plus the Creamer & Sugar Set, and Salt & Pepper Set in this pattern, while supplies last.
  • Materials:  Earthenware
  • Dimensions: 6.5 inches Tall, approx 5.0 inches in Diameter (at widest point).  Holds 28oz,  (32oz to the very top).

Absolutely pristine, no crazing, no issues.  Please review all pictures and make sure you love this item before purchasing, we can't accept returns.  Please remember these are VINTAGE and ANTIQUE items, they are NOT new, every effort has been made to show any scratches, wear  and imperfections.

Franciscan Ceramics is a brand of pottery from Gladding, McBean & Co., (1875- today).  Gladding McBean has a very extensive history, we will concentrate on the Franciscan line and provide you a brief insight into this very popular ceramic.  In 1932 Gladding McBean made a line of experimental dinnerware in solid colors.  In 1934, they first used the brand name: “Franciscan Pottery”.  The company name was changed to Franciscan Ware in 1936.  They were the first company to sell a dinnerware “Starter Set,” all packaged together in one box.  This pattern, “Desert Rose” was introduced in 1941, it was the second hand-painted embossed dinnerware developed by the company, ("Apple", being the first one introduced in 1940).  These two patterns remained the company's best sellers and they are known as "the most popular patterns ever made in America."  Later Interpace owned the line from 1962-1979 and Wedgwood from 1979-1984. Originally made in California, Wedgwood moved the Franciscan pottery production to England in 1983. Patterns Desert Rose, Apple, and Fresh Fruit were moved to the Johnson Brothers division of Wedgwood in England and all other dinnerware lines were discontinued.  In 1984, Wedgwood closed the Franciscan Ceramics division. In 1986, Waterford Glass Group purchased Wedgwood, which included the Franciscan brand, only the Desert Rose and Apple patterns survived, they've been made in China since 2004.  However, in 2011 Apple was discontinued and in 2013 Desert Rose was discontinued.  In 2015 all Johnson Brothers and Franciscan products were discontinued.  The Lincoln, California plant of Gladding McBean continues to produce architectural terra cotta, roofing tiles, and sewer tiles.
